I-40 Westbound closed at the TN / NC line
Alternate Route
From TDOT:
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Both lanes of Interstate 40 West in Cocke County have been closed following an early morning rockslide between Mile Markers 450 and 451.
Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) Geotechnical Engineers are continuing to evaluate the slide and are currently developing a plan to stabilize the mountainside. An emergency contract will also be initiated to clean-up debris from this morning’s slide.
There is currently no estimate for when I-40 West will reopen.
In the meantime, motorists traveling on I-40 West can take the following detour around the rockslide area:
From North Carolina:
Motorists are advised to take I-240 West (Exit 53B) in Asheville to I-26 West (Exit 4A) to I-81 South (Exit 8A) back to I-40 West.
The detour route is approximately 53 miles.

Rockslide Keeps it on the Sunnyside
Alternate Route Provides Adventure
Although the detour is only 53 miles total, the trip up I-26 to I-81 and back to I-40 W is one that shouldn't be missed. That corridor is highlighted in the Tennessee Trails & Byways Sunny Side Trail and provides plenty of incredible sights along the way.
Visit quaint towns like Jonesborough. The oldest town in Tennessee, it is known for its annual Storytelling Festival and quaint downtown district. Or have a "Bible Burger" at the 101 year old Tinsley-Bible Drug Store & Soda Fountain in Dandridge. Go off trail and discover the lost colony of the Melungeons in Sneedville or stop at the historic General Morgan Inn in Greeneville.
The Sunny Side Trail is full of little known places you've got to see!
